Tanks or cylinders of compressed gas get used in all kinds of places, but disposing of that tank or cylinder is a whole other issue. Whether it's a small canister of propane that you took camping with you, a can of compressed air, or a canister of compressed gas that you used for welding, you need to make sure that you are handling it correctly when you are disposing of it. There are going to be different ways that you need to handle the canisters depending on what is in them because some of the gasses out there could be hazardous to handle. A lot of the canisters of compressed gas that you get can be returned to the places where you got them, especially if they are empty. Those canisters can then be refilled and used again. For example, if you got a tank full of helium for balloons and celebrations, you can take that tank back to the store that you got it from. If you haven't completely emptied the tank out, you may be able to get some of your money back when you turn in the tank because you didn't use all the gas. Another way you can safely and correctly dispose of these tanks is to take them to your local hazardous waste disposal center. Just because it says "waste disposal" doesn't mean that the tank is going to be thrown away. Many of those centers can also handle recycling things like compressed gas tanks. That's because they can handle any of the gasses that may be leftover in the tank after you have used it. It can be really hard to completely empty the tank during your use. It may read as empty, but there may still be more gas left in the tank. Once the disposal center has made sure that all the gas is out of the tank, they can break it down by doing things like taking off the nozzle, removing the valves, and doing other similar things. That will let them recycle or otherwise dispose of the tanks.
